The Americans with Disabilities Act is considered one of the most important laws of the 20th century. It is the foundation to ensure equal opportunity for all persons with disabilities in our government, public services, transportation, employment, and communications. Under the ADA, persons with disabilities are protected from discrimination on the basis of disability. This law has allowed individuals with disabilities to independently work, learn, and enjoy the activities our community has to offer.

MISSION: The Mission of the Office of Accessibility and ADA is to prevent discrimination against persons with disabilities by City Departments, City Personnel, and Agencies receiving financial assistance from the City in their programs, policies, procedures, and facilities by monitoring compliance with the ADA and Ordinance # 9779, investigating disability-related complaints, providing technical assistance and training about disability laws and issues, and evaluating the needs of individuals with disabilities on a continuous basis.
VISION: The City of El Paso seeks to provide outstanding services to support a high quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors by continually improving compliance with ADA law, understanding the different abilities of those whom we serve, and better meeting the needs of those requesting our services. By doing so, we will build a city that welcomes and includes people of diversity, independence, and equal value so that we can all participate in the development of a fully inclusive society.
An individual is considered to have a disability if he/she has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such impairment, or is regarded as having such impairment. Persons discriminated against because they have a known association or relationship with an individual with a disability also are protected.
